“P. King Duckling,” from Shout! Factory, is more than a colorful palette and kid-friendly characters. The writers of the show display strong attention to the off-hand comments and antics of the supporting characters, making for a fun children’s television series suitable for kids and adults to watch and savor together.
What stands out in this series is how the situations are more practical and grounded than other children’s programs. In the first episode, P. King Duckling deals with a friend’s birthday. He plans a party in secret…so secretively, that Wombat feels forgotten. We learn how the characters are challenged to proactively communicate, even when they don’t think they need to. Or when the gang sets out to purchase new clothing, P. King instead makes his own clothing line. The episode shows how individuality is a far greater value then what others think. The show deals with situations that prove more realistic and relatable. Still, kids may not recognize the difference, what with the cheery color palette and wonderful cast of animal characters. The show is so delightful, and can easily allow parents and children to talk about these applicable themes. The pig character, Chumpkins, has a few off-handed comments, but otherwise this is an appropriate programs for all ages, and prepares the intended audience for themes of working with friends and proactive communication skills. Because of the relatable content and cheery nature of the production, the Dove Foundation awards “P. King Duckling” the Dove All Ages Seal of Approval.
