Steve McQueen: An American Icon

On the surface McQueen had everything he could want—fame, cars, homes, more money than he could spend in a lifetime. An avid fan of the actor (and owner of a replica of McQueen’s car in the classic film "Bullitt"), Pastor Greg Laurie hits the road in his mint Mustang, traveling the country in search of the true, untold story of McQueen's redemption-filled final chapters.

Dove Review

Steve Mcqueen was the King of Cool. Fame, fortune, women, cars—he had it all. At the height of his career in the ‘60s and ‘70s, he was Hollywood’s highest-paid actor, charging $50,000 to simply read a script.

Still, something was missing.

With two failed marriages, a near-death experience (he was supposed to have gone to a party at actress Sharon Tate’s home the night of the Manson murders), and struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, McQueen’s life was spiraling out of control. Like many Hollywood facades, he externally lacked nothing; yet internally he was empty, battling demons he couldn’t seem to defeat.

Realizing his mortality and struggling to fill the void inside of him, McQueen exited the world of fortune and fame, embarking on a search for truth and meaning.

From Harvest Church Pastor Greg Laurie and the Erwin brothers (“Woodlawn,” “October Baby”), “Steve McQueen: American Icon” chronicles McQueen’s life, relationships, career and spiritual journey. The documentary features never-before-seen photos and interviews with McQueen’s closest friends and relatives including his third wife, Barbara Minty McQueen, the great Mel Gibson, McQueen biographer Marshall Terrill, and more.

The film soars with McQueen’s ultimate triumph! We are carried along gracefully through the eyes and genuine admiration of Greg Laurie, self-identified as one of McQueen’s biggest fans. This film is a feast for film buffs, race fans and a whole world of anyone seeking fulfillment. This is a story that will stir and bless a wide audience across generations.

While there are a few references to drugs, alcohol, mental illness and abuse, “Steve McQueen: American Icon” is an insightful, wholesome documentary that promises to entertain the whole family. It highlights the power of redemption and drives home the fact that no one—no matter how far gone—is beyond the reach of Jesus Christ. This inspiring documentary is awarded the Dove Seal of Approval for All Ages.
