Redemption is always an uphill battle. For Liam (Alex Roe), a country music star, his return to his hometown leads him on a personal quest to rekindle relationships with his father (John Benjamin Hickey), his high school flame Josie (Jessica Rothe), and his daughter Billy (Abby Ryder Fortson) who he hasn’t spoken to since her birth. For once, he claims responsibility for his own life and for others as he becomes a more compassionate, caring figure in others’ lives.
Forever My Girl encourages audiences to lean into their relationships instead of run away from them. On the road, touring and often lonely, Liam is only awakened when he gets to know and understand what it means to take care of another life. Billy turns out to be quite sassy, but still sweet and in need of her father. The film does an excellent job of not only healing a romantic relationship, although Liam and Josie’s story proves touching, but all of the relationships surrounding Liam. It is a kind and unique take that is wonderful for audiences to behold. There is some language and substance abuse to be aware of, but the latter is not condoned by the filmmakers. With its strong theme of redemption in mind, we are proud to award Forever My Girl with approval for Ages 12+.
