This episode of When Calls the Heart is engaging, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. The lovely, committed townsfolk of Hope Valley continue to exhibit sacrificial behavior, and in this installment of the series, they particularly fight for justice—not through any kind of aggressive resistance, but through diplomacy. Mayor Abigail (Loughlin) is as always an upstanding and well-respected leader, and it is interesting to note that we see a woman in this role during pioneer days! Women were, in fact, fairly liberated at this time, willingly taking on what was considered men’s work, and sometimes not by choice. Abigail is a picture of this kind of woman, yet she continues to be graceful and gentle in her manner.
The sweet gift that Rosie (Pascale Hutton), a dress designer, gives one local couple—who is celebrating an anniversary but cannot afford extravagance—is heartwarming and exhibits what was going on economically at the time. The shop owners take Rosie’s idea a step further and develop a plan to make dress patterns that will help other women sew their own dresses.
Not only will young viewers get a nice dose of history from this modern-day Little House on the Prairie, they will also be able to see school from the schoolteacher’s perspective and to understand the hard work and sacrifice that goes into this kind of service. This is partly because Elizabeth is involved in the daily lives of her students in the community, and in this episode, we are also introduced to Elizabeth’s sister Julie (Charlotte Hegele). It is fun and inspiring to journey with her through her struggle with career choice, where she learns things about herself and concludes it is best to work towards her greatest gifting. The film ends on a cliffhanger where Elizabeth becomes aware that Jack might be injured in warfare that is taking place in the North.
The Dove Take
When a courtroom drama ensues where the community has to fight for business to remain in their town so they can thrive, Hope Valley continues to live up to its name. The residents display to the authorities how keeping one’s word is paramount and choosing to sacrifice the profits of a few for the benefit of many is admirable and honorable. The town’s children vie for what is best for everyone, setting an excellent example for young viewers who might feel disconnected from their own community at large. Hope Valley continues to uphold the themes of camaraderie, compassion, faith, grace, and love ongoing and in spite of their obstacles. It is inspiring to watch a show based on solid morals and beliefs in God and community.
