Dove Review

In the family drama Heartland, professional and personal strife plagues a family after the unexpected death of a family member. Left to pick up the pieces are grandfather Jack (Shaun Johnston) and granddaughters Lou (Michelle Morgan) and Amy (Amber Marshall). With deep pains bubbling in the foreground, the series takes its time taking off to try and resolve some of these emotional struggles, an idea that in turn allows for the intimacy of the drama to really shine.

Set in the gorgeously captured country setting of Alberta, Canada, Heartland pits the natural world’s work (on the ranch, with the animals, working the land) with the problems of the people working it. It is an interesting dichotomy at all times, and the concept of family is seen as tumultuous as outdoor vistas. The relationships between characters are often viewed as an ebb and flow, never stagnant, but the series is focused and directed toward resolve at all times. As far as content goes, the only thing viewers need to be aware of is some coarse, harsh words between characters and some underage drinking/partying, as well as occasional scenes of tension and peril.

The Dove Take

At the end of the day, at the end of each episode, family comes first. The series’ trajectory towards peace and resolve affirms the kind of messages Dove viewers can appreciate and gravitate towards, even if some of the themes tend to lean on the adult side of life. Dove is proud to award Heartland with approval for Ages 12+.
