In 1995 I had the opportunity to meet Dean Jones and watch several of his movies during a benefit fundraiser for The Dove Foundation. Among these movies was “The Love Bug,” and I loved it. I saw it on the big screen, and it was beautiful.
Some years passed, and when I had another opportunity to view the movie, this time on DVD with many excellent special features, I jumped at the opportunity. The movie itself was digitally mastered perfectly, and it was as fun to watch as it had ever been. When the movie was over, I turned to the extra DVD full of special features, and I was blown away. From new footage combined with old, describing the techniques of Jimmy McDonald, who gave the movies all of their sound effects, to rare and original footage of Dean Jones taking you through the production of the movie and hosting Love Bug Day at DisneyLand.
This newly re-mastered DVD treat was fun for me to watch, and I was impressed with the way everything was put together. It is a must see for kids, and for anyone who has ever seen “The Love Bug” before. Some of the great special features include: The Many Lives of Herbie; The Man Who Gave Herbie His Voice; Deleted Scenes; Audio Commentary with Dean Jones, Michele Lee and Buddy Hackett.
