This documentary reveals Jane Goodall’s passion and work with chimpanzees in Africa since 1960 to 2002. The film begins in black and white and then jumps ahead to current times with color footage. The cinematography is breathtaking and we see the chimps in their natural habitat and environment. We see them play, fight, rest, make a nest in the trees to sleep in, use intelligence to find food, and interact with humans.
The film portrays the various personalities including Frodo, who is quite large and a bully, to Titan, and Fifi (the first chimpanzee Jane ever saw, and who today is a mother and grandmother of several other chimps). Jane refers to the forest they live in as “The Garden of Eden.” There are a few comments that viewers should be aware of. There are some indirect references to evolution as it is mentioned a few times that chimps and humans are basically the same. And, when some chimps annihilate the southern portion of a particular location, by killing an entire village of other chimps, it is stated that they are more like humans than some people realize. The Island of Gombe is a fascinating place to spend forty five minutes, and the IMAX experience makes the treat even more special. We award our Dove Seal to this nicely produced film.
