Martian Child (DVD)

The comic drama "Martian Child" stars John Cusack as a recently widowed science fiction writer who adopts a young boy that claims to be from Mars. But the new father ignores some sage advice about the perils of parenthood from his sister and gets more than he bargained for when a series of strange occurrences lead him to believe the child's claim may be true. Based on an award-winning short story by sci-fi luminary David Gerrold, "Martian Child" is directed by Menno Meyjes and co-stars Amanda Peet and Joan Cusack.

Dove Review

Have you ever known a kid who is a little bit different? Young Dennis (Bobby Coleman) fits the bill as he believes he is from Mars. Enter recently-widowed Dave Gordon, a science fiction writer who was a bit different himself as a child. Dave understands Dennis’ need to express his imagination and he looks into adopting him. This is a film that speaks positively on the subject of adoption.

There are some tender moments and interesting interaction between Dave and Dennis. When an adoption agency official has second thoughts about Dave raising Dennis, Dennis comes through. Yet there is one more hurdle which must be overcome before Dave and Dennis can enjoy a permanent father-son relationship. This film is one for the entire family, although the young ones might find it to be slow moving. We happily award our Dove Seal to this DVD and we are glad that a positive movie on adoption is available.
