The film exposes the consequences of child abuse and praises Lily’s friend who finally tells adults what’s happened to Lily. Despite Lily’s struggles, the childlike innocence of Lily is a nostalgic reminder of the past when happiness was found in simplicity.

The movie also glances into history by addressing issues associated with the Civil Rights Movement.
