This is an awesome DVD and a great family story. John Ratzenberger is terrific as a wood carver named Ernest Otto who misses his wife, who recently died from cancer. However, he finds a young man to help mold and guide, Matthew Stevenson (Dakota Daulby).
Matt’s father and mother are divorcing and they become angry with each other every time they see each other. Matt’s father, Jack, takes his stress out on Matt by constantly getting on his case. His mother Rita cannot control her temper when she gets around Jack. Matt gets into trouble at the beginning of the movie, vandalizing a church, but he likes Mr. Otto and as he works with him, Mr. Otto gets him to open up about how his parent’s relationship changed when his dad stopped attending church, and how their divorce is tearing Matt up. However, when Mr. Otto gets Matt to think in terms of “What would Jesus do?” his life begins to change in amazing ways.
This is an incredible movie, filled with wonderful themes of faith and forgiveness and it promotes the idea that change is possible when people simply follow God. We are more than pleased to award the film five Doves, our best rating.
