Christiana (1979)

The second chapter in the Pilgrim's Progress story. John Bunyan's immortal classic is completed with Christiana, Part 2 of the world-famous book, Pilgrim's Progress. Christiana, who had earlier scoffed at her husband for leaving his family in the City of Destruction, truly repents of her sins. She is rewarded with a glowing faith and leads her daughter, Credence, and sons, Avail and Avow, plus her doubting neighbor, Mercy, toward the Celestial City. With the help of Greatheart, Christiana sets a wonderful example of a loving, but concerned mother who guards and guides her children through numerous dangerous adventures. At Doubting Castle, Mercy at last takes firm grip upon the promises of God's Word and is rewarded with deep faith. Then, at Pilgrim's Rest, the entire group discovers the meaning of the verse, "For me to live is Christ and to die is to gain."

Dove Review

This is a strong next-chapter film to “Pilgrim’s Progress” but “Christiana” stands on its own two feet as a solid faith-friendly film for ages twelve plus.

Pilgrim has been promoted to his celestial reward and his wife, Christiana, is determined to take a journey of her faith of her own. Joining her is Mercy and Evangelist and Interpreter who help give guidance along the way. She deals with the belief of some that when a man dies he “dies as a dog dies”. When a daughter asks her mother what sin is, she is told, “We don’t talk of that”. Yet Christiana pins her hope on eternal life.

This film is wholesome for the most part but does include a brief scene of men hanging and we are told they went spiritually astray and the scene is symbolic of spiritual death. The young men look like they are simply asleep but the scene might disturb some viewers so we wanted to note it. The story of Christiana and her spiritual journey is one which features various characters encouraging her and several Bible quotations. We are pleased to present it with our Dove “Faith Friendly” Seal for ages twelve plus.
