The Warrant is an action-packed movie that is part western, part Civil War, and all about the reckoning that one must face for past deeds. Neal McDonough stars as Sheriff John Breaker, who is seeking a killer named Virgil, also known as “The Saint” (Casper Van Dien). Virgil was a union soldier with Breaker during the war, but his son was shot and died. He blamed the war and Lincoln and is now a murdererand–along with a gang–on the run.
Breaker’s own son, Cal (Steven R. McQueen), is now a marshal and although his relationship with his father has been strained at times, he joins his father in attempting to bring Virgil to justice. The movie moves back and forth between Civil War action and shooting and killing to the current pursuit of “The Saint” and his men.
The filmdoes a good job in showing what can go on in a soldier’s mind who has suffered great loss. One soldier says, “It lasted four years. It felt like four hundred.” There are several scenes of shooting with only a small amount of blood. People do fall to the ground, dead. For these reasons we are awarding the movie our Dove seal for Ages 12+.
The Dove Take:
This explosive movie shows the strains of war in a realistic fashion, one that will elicit sympathy from the viewer.
